HIVE Southampton Committee

Emily Waterhouse
Chairperson

Emily is going into her third year of medical school this year. Having been involved with HIVE for the entirety of her time at Southampton she will be moving on from the position of Events Coordinator to Chair the Committee this year, a very exciting prospect. She is looking forward to working closely with the new committee to continue the good work achieved over the last few years and take it forward. Above all, she looks forward to another year of successful teaching, bringing in her experiences from the Volunteer Programme in Tanzania on VP2 this summer.

Kay Seal
Training Coordinator

Kay, a 4th year Medical Student, was new to HIV Education last year after the awesome London Underground bucket collection inspired her to get involved. She became hooked after just one teaching session and has since joined the committee as Training Coordinator. She hopes to develop HIV education even further and get loads more people trained up to help with what promises to be a very busy year!

Alex Collister
Schools Coordinator

Alex is currently a fourth year medic, originally from the midlands she loves the extra sunshine Southampton has to offer. She started as a HIVE teacher in her second year, gaining an amazing experience across a wide variety of schools. Her main passion for teaching lies with the 11-16 year old science and PHSE lessons. Alex is the new school’s co-ordinator for this age group, she is very excited for the challenge of expanding upon HIVE’s current success.

Stewart Semple
Sixth Form Coordinator

Stewart is currently in 2nd year of the graduate medical course at Southampton University, having previously undertaken an Anatomy degree at Glasgow University. He has always had a passion for teaching – which began whilst he was studying in Scotland, and he always tries to make his lessons both entertaining and informative. He has been on the committee with HIVE for the past year and has enjoyed both the teaching aspects and also the events organised, including taking part in the Jailbreak this year.

This year, Stewart is looking forward to both developing the Sixth Form teaching curriculum and making links with new colleges, to extend the amount of post-16 pupils in which the HIVE programme reaches.

Kate Rogers
Development Officer

Kate is in her second year of graduate Medicine at Southampton University having previously studied Medical Sciences at Leeds. Her role on the HIVE committee is to oversee Development ensuring not only that HIVE Southampton is up to date on current HIV news, but that teaching materials are fresh, informative and fun, whilst maintaining HIVE’s standard of HIV/AIDS education across the board. Kate was heavily involved in HIV awareness when studying her previous degree and is dedicated to continuing to do so wholeheartedly. She feels privileged and excited to be part of an innovative, hard working and caring team and highly recommends people to get involved with such a worthwhile cause.

Amanda Bruce
Events Coordinator

Amanda is currently in her 4th year of medicine following a year out completing an intercalated degree.  She has been involved in HIVE since 2010 and has greatly enjoyed both the teaching and the fantastic HIVE events run in the past.  She is looking forward to the opportunity of coordinating events this year, creating new ones to add to the calendar whilst always aiming to maintain the same high standards associated with HIVE events. She hopes these will not only serve to raise money to support the critically important work being done in Tanzania but also to create events people will both enjoy and remember boosting awareness of HIVE/SIC what we hope to achieve and why.

Sangeetha Rajan
Publicity Officer

Sangeetha is a 3rd year Medical Student new to the HIVE committee this year. Keen to be involved in something new and different and having thoroughly enjoyed being a HIVE teacher, she is excited to be part of the committee. She is looking forward to taking on the role of Publicity Officer and helping HIVE carry on the amazing work it has been doing. As part of her role she not only wants to help publicise HIVE events, but also maximise awareness of the work that SIC and HIVE carry out.

Nick Ridler
Treasurer

Nick is a third year medic at Southampton. Originally from London, he started teaching with HIVE in 2010 and enjoyed it so much he decided to apply for the position of Treasurer. He finds working with HIVE interesting and extremely rewarding, not to mention a great excuse to skip lectures! He is looking forward to continuing teaching about HIV, and getting more involved with organising and planning events.

John Whale
Secretary

John is currently a third year medic at the University of Southampton. Before joining HIVE in 2010 as a voluntary teacher, he spent his gap year teaching English to undergraduates in China with Africa and Asia Venture. He relishes teaching, both for the challenges it presents and the rewards it brings. As committee secretary, he aims to provide a cornerstone of reliability and organisation for fellow members. He would like to encourage anyone considering teaching to volunteer for HIVE, as it is simply great fun and instils confidence and character, which he hopes to carry with him in the future.
