HIVE – Information for teachers

Download our HIVE Southampton Schools Brochure

HIV Education (HIVE) recognises a lack of knowledge and understanding of the HIV epidemic in both the developed and developing world amongst UK school children.

We aim to increase knowledge and challenge attitudes through insightful, interactive and thought provoking workshops. We hope that through doing this we will inspire young people to pursue ways in which they can collaboratively make an impact on limiting the HIV epidemic on a local, national and international level.

HIVE Southampton has been running since 2006 and over 2000 pupils have been taught by our dedicated team of trained medical students from the University of Southampton. HIVE Southampton is supported by a GUM Consultant and Linda Turner, from the University of Southampton Widening Access to Medicine scheme as well as the SIC UK executive committee.

LEARNING OUTCOMES & LESSON PLANS

Please download our HIVE Southampton Schools Brochure to read more about what we do and view suggested learning outcomes and lesson plans. HIVE workshops are flexible in content and duration and our Schools Coordinator will meet with you prior to booking to tailor our teaching session to your school’s requirements.

SIXTH FORM HIVE WORKSHOPS

We are now offering workshops and teaching sessions to sixth form age pupils.
Our sixth form teaching differs from our schools programme in several ways. It is much more discussion-based, conducted in the style of a University tutorial and we explore student input and opinions. It should be mostly student-led with the HIVE teacher simply facilitating discussion and directing the conversation in order for all the learning outcomes to be achieved. In order to provoke discussion and opinions, the students are presented with a recent news article or extract from a scientific journal about HIV/AIDS, that can be discussed.

Our Sixth Form Coordinator is available to work with you to organise a session appropriate to your group’s requirements.
